Kafrene System. Woof; so many smugglers. Asteroid colony! Rogue One.
Sar Yavok has been watching the holoterminals in the security room aboard the Renegade for a long, long time today. But it's finally paid off. Sweet, sweet intel.
Word is that the Dissident-class light cruiser has been spotted in the system, along with its complement of TIEs on a mission to pick up some good ol' fashioned illicit good. Nothing's illegal when you're in charge, right? Anyway, since this is a relatively small target (compared to a star destroyer) the time has come to attack, and hopefully dig through its databanks for some information on Leia's wherabouts.
The Codru Dream, a YT-2400 warps into the sector, followed shortly after by...whatever ships the Resistance types are flying.
Sitting in the lounge of the 2400 is Colonel Sar Yavok, the man who threw this slapdash little mission together. He's just sitting there. Waiting.
Snug in the cockpit of Blue One, Gren Delede was able to slip away from another day of paperwork and meetings to show the young whippersnappers how the brass can still do it. Or something. The new-model A-wing reverts to real-space, and the Admiral begins to punch buttons, beginning a sensor sweep of the system. The Resistance Starfighter Corps is well-represented for this important mission, as all of Gold Squadron, and half of Red Squadron has been scrambled, and hopefully will exit hyperspace with an intact formation. <<Pilots, sound off. And let's kill these bastards.>>
The target is already in system, and they managed to come out of hyperspace relatively near. Energy surges on the First Order Light Cruiser show shields strengthening and weapons going hot. Smaller sensor images begin to appear as it launches it's squadron of TIE Fighters.
Ektor comes out of the hyperspace jump in formation with the other starfighters; so far, no disaster. Over the comm, he sounds off with a sardonic edge, "Flying gold hatpin number four, standing by. Target and escorts on scopes, accelerating to engage."
The Arc-170 Reconnaisance Fighter. As far as Kirit is concerned, it might as well be a freighter. Starfighters shouldn't be so sluggish that they require a rear gunner. It was the reason she was never keen on the MG-100 project. As far as she is concerned, progress peaked with the B-wing when it comes to assault starfighters. Now, she has to talk to two people AND a droid. ~I hate Arcs~ she mutters in Verpine clicks. <<Everyone be alert. S-foils to attack positions. Our job is to bring down the shields then take out the sublight engines. Keep the collateral damage to a minimum.>> The pair of x-wing predecessors unlock their s-foils into the signature dragonfly positions and raise shields. <<Red 4 to Blue Leader. Red wing preparing for attack run.>>
<<Gold Leader, standing by.>> None too happy about the hatpin remark, David bites back the urge to bite the new guy's head off immediately upon exiting hyperspace. <<Gold 2, stay on my wing, Gold 3 is with Four. Don't get your 'hatpins' shot down, we can't afford new ones.>> Accelerating to engage the TIEs, Dave's wingman reports in. <<Gold 2, reporting in and staying with you, Leader.>> comes the reply from young Jump Jye.
Sitting as comfortable as he can in the cockpit of Gold 3, Karas pulls the levers back to revert back into real space. This was it and honestly he couldn't help but be nervous and excited all at the same time. Still forming up into squadrons, "Copy That Gold Leader." he says into his comms. Karas looks around and finds Gold 4, <<Alright Gold 4, we are wingman, so lets make sure we all come home.>> he says as he looks to his sensors and get ready, pulling in data from Spark his astromech as it feeds data into his computers.
Klaxons begin to sound all over the Incarceration as the jolly Rebel junk fleet zips into existence. There's about to be one heck of a furball, but for now, it's quiet. The Codru Dream draws near to the Dissident-class light cruiser with the help of its Tier 3 engines and the element of surprise.
Sar looks up at Sapphira and holds a finger up to his lips, shaking his head at her as he finishes cleaning his EE-3 Carbine. He stands up slowly from his seat on the bench and says, "Alright. Everybody to the ramp!"
And just like that, Dosk's fancy flying has them flying into the open hangar on the side of the Incarceration and setting down like a leaf. The Hounds may be long gone, but it's about time to let slip the dogs of war. *metal music begins*
<<Copy, Red 4. We'll keep those fighters off of your people.>> Gren's A-wing's throttle is pressed to the firewall, and the fast little craft shoots ahead of the formation, and spirals in toward the incoming TIE squadron. The blue and white starfighter's twin cannons begin to spit laser fire at the lead TIE, with the first burst tearing a long gouge in the pylon holding it's starboard wing steady. A second burst is enough to detach the hexagon, and send it careening into the cockpit. Most of the TIE pilots seem to focus on Red Squadron, as they are bigger targets. Laser cannons from the Incarceration begin to light up space around the starfighters, likely going to do big damage, if they hit.
The pair of Arcs are pretty well ignoring the incoming Ties save for the slow roll of evasive maneuvers. Their fire eis focused upon the distant cruiser. Angry red fire spits out from a series of cannon and two torpedoes soar out in blue streaks towards the cruiser. There's a number of impacts against the shields but they hold for now.. if severely weakened. One generator pylon on the cruiser can be seen sparking as it struggles to keep the shields up. <<All wings, I'm not seeing any swivel turrets on these TIEs. Means they're regular old fighters, not Special Forces.>> Dave calls as he and his wingman pass shooting through the cloud of TIEs. In fact, Dave lines up a shot, the N-1's blasters narrow enough together to hit the enemy TIE in the cockpit viewport twice, causing it to burst and explode a moment later. Another TIE manages to score a hit on him, but it merely causes the shields to flicker, doing no damage to the hull. The offending TIE gets shot by Jump Jye for its troubles, to similar effect.
As the Ties come in Karas is already evading laser fire reigning in on them, he does a snap roll evading the laser fire and he quickly throttles up his engines pushing the N-1 faster. As he does this slipping under another shot and getting a lock on the lead TIE. quickly firing off his shot, as he does green laser bolts slice into the TIE destroying it quickly, shifting his speed and attitude adjusters he is able to strafe another TIE that was flying on the destroyed TIE's wing damaging it badly. <<Ok. Finish your target and follow me in, we are going in after the ships Shield Generator, hopefully this will help our teams out here and else where.>> not giving pivotal information about their team on the inside.
Delede's A-wing continues to corkscrew the furball, the little wedge-shaped snubfighter evading the TIE following him with ease. A little smile crosses his face, and he flips a switch on his flightstick, looking over his shoulder at the eyeball on his six. The laser cannons on either side of the A-wing's fuselage swivel to aim behind Blue One. A pull of the trigger later, and the trailing First Order TIE ceases to exist in its functional form. <<These guys are scrubs. They're making it too easy.>> And the TIE numbers are drastically down, with more than half the squadron destroyed. The gunners on the Incarceration try their best to defend the shield generators.
Ektor answers Karas, "Mine's down, on your right side, switching to torpedoes." Linking fire, and setting the targeting computer, Ektor throws an irregular juke into his attack run every few seconds to thwart incoming fire, he mutters past grinning teeth, "Not so tough without a thousand friends, are you?" <<Torpedoes away.>>
Karas is already heading towards the ship, keeping with his wingman, "Spark keep our damaged TIE's position, we will finish him if he doesn't run or die yet." he says. Getting a tweedle from the astromech, he smirks. Karas hears Ektor, <<Copy that..>> he locks onto the shield generator and lets loose with proton torpedo, letting the missile's blue energy trail rocket off towards the generator hitting it and damaging it but not destroying it. He quickly shifts the controls and banks following Gold 4. <<We will come around for another pass. Mine is still active.>> he says.
Flying a close formation to combine fire means you can't juke but so much. The pair of larger Arc 170s continue their inexhorable approach on the Cruiser. The green bolts coming out from its turrets zip past the cockpits like angry gnats.. until one of them strikes the shields of Red 4 and a warning klaxon goes off. Shields at fifty percent. ~Yes yes, stuff it where the crater doesn't shine.~ Kirit quips. "Rant. Get on those shields would you?" Meanwhile, Kirit's aim continues to be a dead eye shot. Her wingman isn't so bad either. This time both torpedoes strike true and more sparks fly on the surface of the cruiser as its shields strain to maintain cohesion. Generators are blowing out across its surface.
<<Good shot, Gold 2.>> Dave encourages Jump Jye over the comms, the pair staying on the TIE, dodging shots from other TIEs around. A shot from Gold Leader sends two emerald green bolts flying towards the TIE that had just shot at David's fighter, sending it careening out of control before the friction causes the fighter to explode. The two stay on eachother's wing as they bank around for another target. Or two.
There are only a handful of TIE fighters left, at this point. As in, four of them. They're doing their best to swoop in on Resistance snubfighters, but they are being chewed to pieces. Another swoops down behind Delede's A-wing, and is vaped with a quick pull of the trigger from the aft-firing laser cannons. The blue and white speedster careens into a starboard intercept on a second eyeball, and his guns swivel to fire into the forward arc once more. Another burst, and another dead TIE. <<That's two more. We're almost clear here.>>
The Incarcerator continues to fill space with green defensive fire, but it's shields are drastically dropping, and another good targeted salvo is apt to shut them down for good.
<> Ektor responds to Karas, angling to take a slightly different attack vector on the remaining shield generator. "What I'd give for a Y-wing, right now, instead of be8ng strapped to a tin-plated tadpole," he mutters through smiling teeth. The smile slips into a snarl as the juking needed to avoid the incoming emerald tide of laser fire ruins his targeting. <<I got nothing this run, Gold Three. Make it hurt.>>
The relentless assault upon the Cruiser by the pair of Arc fighters finally has the desired effect. Sparks play across the surface of the capital ship as the shield generators finally fail completely and the shields drop. <<Target shields down, Blue leader. Red element, bring it wide for an attack run on the engines.>> So saying, Kirit banks left and begins a slow arc around the now shieldless Cruiser to come in from the craft's rear.
Gold 3 is maneuvering with a cold precision as he is taking fire from the Incarcerator and TIEs alike, his fighter streaking through space with a purpose and nothing is deterring him, he has a few close calls as lasers glance his shields ever so softly. As Gold 4 moves in and misses his shot, Karas doesn't get distracted, firing his proton torpedo next after getting a hot lock. The missiles streaks in fast, and detonates destroying the Shield Generator, he grins and pulls away, <<I got it, now lets help with clearing the skies, if there is anything left.>> he calls to Gold 4.
Gold Leader, flanked still by Gold 2, speeds into the fray once again. Finding a target, the two link up when Gold Leader is lit up with a bright green glow as it's hit with a turbolaser volley from the Incarcerator. This causes the fighter to spin out, the wingman left on his own but losing the shot. Inside the cockpit, panicked beeps are interspersed with shrill whistles as the astromech scolds David for getting the shields knocked out. <<All wings, Gold Leader has lost all shields, I'm having Ones take a look at fixing them.>> he calls, scouting the skies for Jump Jye and Gold 2.
A streak of light is seen as a ship exits hyperspace. The s-foils of black leader unfold as soon as the craft exits hyperspace and the flare of blue engines being pushed to full throttle can be seen shortly thereafter <<Sithspit! I stay behind for a few moments to make sure that we're not being followed out and everything goes to hell.>> The x-wing rolls on its port wings as it tries to evade fire from the nearby cruiser. <<Blue Leader this is black leader. I'm on my way to engage enemy eyeballs unless you have a different task for me to take on.>> Poe looks over his shoulder and says "Alright little buddy lets help our friends out. The x-wing makes small corrections as he bears down on an enemy fighter. The pilot flicks the fire setting switch on his flight stick and sends out two pairs of laser blasts at the eyeball he is chasing. The first set grazes the wing of the enemy and sparks start to fly from the fighter.
There are four TIEs left, including the one that Poe has just enganged. <<Nice to see you, Black Lead. Scour the skies. Then we'll join Arc in disabling this bitch.>> Gren's voice crackles over the radios, and it is clear that he is enjoying the chance to play with the kids. His A-wing swerves through the fight, tracking one of the remaining enemy fighters. A pair of laser bursts cripple his target, while the follow-up punches through the cockpit and kills the pilot. <<That's five. Do try and keep up, people.>> The Admiral is cocky, and he pays for it. An anti-starfighter turret punches through his shields, and scorches his hull. At least there isnt a droid screaming in the back. "Piss."
The target cruiser's engines begin to show a buildup in energy, and it turns, clearly making a course for the edge of the gravity well. Someone has chosen to make a retreat.
"Nice shot, Hatpin Three; that brings us even, again,>> Ektor chuckles to his wingman. He nods, not that comms carry such gestures. A moment later, he remembers to vocalize, "Copy that Gold Three, coming around to point oh-seven; let's give Gold Leader some cover." Spreading a bit off from Karas, to more fully rake the space in an arc before them, the two run down an destroy a trio of TIEs, in moments.
The first flyby that Red squadron does is a hail of cannon fire and torpedoes. Naturally, one can't shoot straight into the engines. The torpedoes would detonate long before impact. Still, one of the main ion drives for the cruisers sputters and fails as the housing and pour conduits are chewed to bits. Even as the pair cruise passed the rear of the Cruiser, the antiaircraft fire rocks Red 4 again. ~Balderdash!~ Kirit cries out as warning klaxons sound and the shields fail. "Rant! What did they program you for!? Bartending!? Get on those shields already!" Rant, naturally, spews a series of binary metaphors but finally does key up some auxilliary power through the strained circuits, restoring some shield power anyway and the klaxons silence. "That's better!"
Karas keeps with his wingman Gold 4, Karas is pushing his N-1 hard. The Yellow fighter moves easily and still avoiding laser fire from the First Order capital ship and Ties, rolling and streaking under laser fire. He grins as his fighter comes into alignment and he fires onto one of the incoming TIEs. Grinning as the TIE fighter blossoms into a giant fireball, he than banks left and as he does he sees another TIE rolling in on another member of Gold flight and Karas lines up his shot and fires, seeing it become damaged than another shot hits and it is destroyed, <<We are all clear.>> he calls to all of Gold Squadron.
Dave pulls out of the fight, his fighter sparking and smoking, the hull blackened in several spots. As he does so, the cruiser fires more blasts after him. The droid in the back bleeps to indicate he's fixed the shields -somewhat-. The small victory doesn't last long, though, as a laser bolt from the cruiser strikes the N-1 in the rear again. <<Took another hit, but it seems the skies are clear apart from the cruiser itself. Blue Leader, you should tell the boarding party as much. I'll... be back here. Out of range. For now.>>
Hearing the situation with Gold Leader, <<Gold squadron pull in around Gold Leader, I will fly cover.>> he calls onto the Gold Squadron channel. <<Can't never take you anywhere huh Gold Leader?>> he says into his comm. A bit of a smirk on his lips, Karas looks around seeing that everything is clear, this is a good thing.
The tie that is in front of black leader is vaped and the pilot shouts a bit of a victory yell for the pilots around him. He watches as a blast from one of the turbolasers shoots out into the void and strikes gold leader. <<Lets clear the skies just a little bit shall we?>> the black x-wing dips to skim the surface of the cruiser and he lines up the turbolaser turret that just shot David and turns it into slag. <<Trying to clear the skies a bit for you all.>>
Gren's attention is diverted. as he's fighting with a damaged starfighter, and incoming fire from the First Order Cruiser. He's able to weave his way through the laser blasts, and seems content to remain close to the hull of the primary target, trying to provide yet another target for the gunners. Inside the cockpit? He's using his free hand to bang aside panels, and dig around in wiring. Sparks and smoke fills the air, until finally, his voice crackles back to life. <<Does anyone copy?>> A pause, and he realizes it is working now...<<Nice work on the TIEs, but keep up the pressure on their engines. Yavok needs more time.>>
<<I hear you, Gold Three," Ektor answers Karas. Poe's reports draw a curious eye to his sensor display. <<Copy ....Black Leader?>> There is an incredulous note to his voice. What kind of Hutt sucker calls themself- Shit! Admiral giving orders to resume the attack. <<I copy, Blue Leader. Moving into position.>> The nimble fighter banks and turns, weaving and juking into another attack run. <<Hatpin Four, I've got an opening- you with me, Gold Three?>> The proton torpedoes detonate and damage a surviving engine bank, but don't fully destroy it.
<<Copy that Blue Leader>> Karas calls into his mic, <<Gold 2, stay with Gold Leader, Gold 4 and other craft not too seriously damaged form up and lets take down the engines.>> he calls on the SFC frequency. Pushing the throttle forward, the N-1 rockets towards the First Order Capital ship. Karas checks his sensors, Gold 4 is already moving int to attack scoring a hit, <<I'm coming back.>> he says as the N-1 threads the needle as Karas hands steady and in control, rolls and dodges laser fire, coming in from behind, he begins firing right most engine, his first few shots miss, but the flurry after that strike home knocking out that engine. <<Engine on the far right is out. Gold 4 regroup before your next run.>>
The element from Red Squadron comes around for a second pass. It would seem that they've practiced full throttle full gun drills. Despite the rapid approach and vibration of the fighters spewing forth hot death, their gunners track the cruiser calmly with their targetting computers. Two more torpedoes streak out to match the heavy cannons and soon the last of the ion engines sputter out. The cruiser is dead stick. <<Red 5 to 4. I took a couple solid hits on that last run. Our astromech is getting up the shields now but that was a rough one.>> <<Four to Five, acknowledged. Follow me in on the next one and I'll cover for you. Lets strip this thing of guns so our people can egress safely.>>
Dave spins Gold Leader around, keeping Gold 2 as a less broken escort, The two dive into the fray once more, dodging around laser fire again and again, before approaching the missile launching point. As Dave goes to drop the payload, nothing actually happens. <<Gold Leader here, failed to launch any torpedos. Must be a malfunction from back when I got shot.>> The misfire leads the two fighters to abort the run, circling around while miraculously dodging all incoming fire from the cruiser.
The black x-wing continues to skim along the surface of the cruiser. The pilot shakes his head and he says "Buddy this is giving me some really bad flashbacks... lets try to avoid getting tagged by any fo these..." a turbolaser blast strikes his starboard s-foil and the x-wing rolls with blast reducing the blast so that he loses only his shields <<This is black leader... shields are down. Continuing my strafing run.>> the pilot squeezes the trigger and watches another turbolaser battery reduced to rubble.
Having acquired that which they came to find, the plucky Rebels, and the Dread Pirate Sar take to the skies once more, the YT-2400 boosting out of the hangar at breakneck speed!
<<All fighters. Time for a final attack run on this son of a bitch. Let's break her back. Dorsal strafing run, let loose with those warheads.>> His damaged A-wing cuts across the surface of the crippled light cruiser, but his targeting computer was apparently fragged when he was hit. <<Piss. Warhead malfunction.>>
Ektor returns, <<Copy, Gold Three. Forming back up.>> The N-1 banks and weaves in a long arc to come alongside Karas. The report of spent and misfiring torpedoes draws a long exhale. "Y-wings. We need some screaming Y-wings.." He stays off the comm as Poe reports his damage and continued run. A slow exhale. "Lets do this." Following his wingman in another run to break the stricken beast. <<Hatpin Four, going in. Torpedoes away.>> He grins as the strike throws up a flash of explosions and vaporized hull plating. It's enough to reflect off eyes and smiling teeth.
Karas is caught a bit unaware as he made his pass, he was going on to strike at one of the turrets, but his ship is hit with a glancing shot. "Kriff!" he growls to himself as he quickly re-orients himself and tries to keep on target, still weaving and not slowing up. When he sees that Gold 3 is forming back up, he smiles, <<Lets help with the turrets if we can.>> he calls.
Even as Red Element arcs away from the now dead engines, the antifighter batteries blaze away. Red 5 is caught in the hail of fire and splits in half, broken at the wings, then explodes. For half an instant, the voices of its crew can be heard screaming in the comms.. then silence. Kirit, too, is silent. She has known that sound far too many times on strafing runs. How she has survived.. she does not know. What she /does/ know is that the cruiser will pay. The Arc-170's thrusters kick in and the vessel sideslips then reverses course. A near point blank range, she unloads from the cannons down the length of the vessel. She's so close her gunner doesn't have to target so much as just fire. The near detonation rocks the vessel but they pass through outgassing deck fire unharmed.
As he comes in, smoke is trailing his fighter and sparks her and there, still Karas is up and going, drawing in one an exposed hull section and firing into it causing more damage before breaking away and escaping.
Gold Leader and Gold 2 are circling for the ordered strafing run on the Incarcerator. Diving in from high above, the two fighters dodge around the laser fire to get into position. "C'mon R2, give me some good news." The bleeps that form the reply are drowned out among the turbolaser fire, so Dave glances at the display on the dashboard, which reads "Shields are back up, don't get shot again." Dave smirks. "I'll try, Ones." It is at that moment Gold 2 gets blasted and is forced to break off. Dave clenches his fist, reaching for the comms. <<Gold 2, status report.>> he demands tensely. <<Not good, Gold Leader.>> comes the short reply, as Dave still has no power to the torpedo launcher. Out of sheer frustration he lets loose a torrent of laser fire at the cruiser before breaking off.
The black x-wing jukes in and out of turbolaser fire as Poe listens to the comms <<Roger that Blue Leader. Black leader is heading up to take her down.>> the pilot says this as a torpedos and missles from the various resistance craft start to strike the surface of the ship. The nose of the black x-wing pulls up and the fighter blasts through the explosion of one of the torpedoes. Once the x-wing is at a safer distance the pilot cuts his thrust and slams a foot down on his port rudder pedal. The ship spins so the nose of the craft is pointed at the cruiser. His thumb flips the firing mode to dual proton torpedoes and squeezes the trigger. The two ice blue projectiles rocket toward the cruiser and when they impact a gout of flame erupts from the other side of the craft. Shortly after that the cruiser starts to have secondary explosions that break the ship apart. <<Splash one cruiser.>>
<<Nice work, people. All of you get to paint on of these ugly ass bastards on your hull.>> Gren's voice crackles over the comms, as he takes up escort formation on the escaping freighter. <<Once we're clear of the gravity well, we'll start the process of getting home. We'll drink to the dead.>> His earlier jubiliation at being back in the cockpit and vaping scrubs is lost. He hates losing pilots. <<Let's go.>> As is customary, he'll jump out once everyone else has cleared the system.
Ektor leaves the verbal response from Gold Squadron on comms to the higher ups, and instructs his Astromech, "Set the course back to base, Ten-Tee." A double beep in return, and the squadron's newest pilot leans back in his chair. "Bringing back one pristine hairpin. Boss is gonna be thrilled."
Kirit Xiptil was coming back around for another run when Poe's torpedoes reach the reactor through a hull breach and the ship begins to rock then plumes of fire spew forth as it goes through its proverbial death rattle. "First Order scum." She comments angrily over the crew comm. "Come on guys. Let's go home." She takes a deep breath then pulls away from the dying ship. The last of the explosion halo the Arc-170 even as she finishes the hyperspace calculations herself. Sure, the droid can do it. But she doesn't trust droids.
Gold Leader and Gold 2 form up with the rest of the fighters, Dave taking point in the group as the squadrons make the jump one by one. "Hm. The hyperdrive wasn't damaged at all. That's lucky." Nor is it damaged on Gold 2, and the two jump out of Hyperspace ahead of Karas and Ektor.
