Description

D'mero is a Ryn -- a mammavian humanoid (part mammal, part bird) of diminutive stature -- standing at only 4'9". He has a muscular, stocky build, with dark grey skin, long arms and dextrous fingers. The shape of his head is noticeably angular, with a very narrow chin, high cheekbones and pointed ears. Each ear boasts a couple of large, circular earrings. D'mero's almond-shaped eyes are a bright grey, set beneath silvery, upward-swept eyebrows. The hair upon his head is also silvery in hue and naturally swept back, and a pair of long, immaculately trimmed mustachios hang down either side of his mouth.

Most noticeable about D'mero's face is his beak-like nose. Formed of dark chitin, it is also perforated with several breathing holes that can make natural music if he so wishes.

The Ryn is garbed in comfortable clothes for travelling: dark grey pants on his legs tucked into yellow-brown boots, with a crimson long-sleeved shirt on his torso. He wears a red and silver kerchief tied around his neck and a long coat of yellow-brown nerf hide that hangs down his knees.

A silver-tuffed prehensile tail -- about 2m in length -- sways in the air behind him.

History

Like many of his people -- who refer to themselves simply as 'the People' -- D'mero Dust-Tail was born aboard a starship in deep space. It was nothing fancy, nor powerful but an aging refugee vessel that saw service in the Clone Wars, many years ago. It was called the Seventh Song, and the few different Ryn clans living aboard it referred to as 'home'. D'mero spent his early years entirely 'on the move'.

He was born into a dark era, when the Galactic Empire reigned supreme, inflicting its anti-alien policies upon most of the worlds in the known galaxy. In addition, the Ryn had a reputation of their own that did not serve them particularly well: they were considered to be thieves, liars, confidence tricksters, etc... for a number of reasons.

D'mero was no exception.

Persecution kept him and his family on the move, just as much as the desire to travel and explore. He visited a variety of worlds -- never staying long -- and the Seventh Song took on other passengers quite often, usually other Sentients fleeing the tyranny of the Empire. Learning some sort of trade-language became a necessity, so most Ryn could speak Huttese, or Traders-Argot. D'mero spent a great deal of time with an elderly Wookiee named Hauwka (or Howie, for short) who 'played the rascal' as much as the other. They explored, gambled, exchanged stories... The young Ryn enjoyed playing pranks on unsuspecting citizens, using his beak-nose (like other Ryn) to mimic the sound of droids, and of course... petty theft. D'mero had a true gift for... acquiring things. He possessed insatiable curiosity, and resorted to stealing things so often, one might call it a compulsion.

This did not help his people's reputation.

Whatever the consequences of his actions, D'mero found himself turning more and more often to petty crimes, to deal with the suffering he beheld all around him. The wounds inflicted by the Empire took long to heal (and not all of them healed at all). He never acted against the poor and downtrodden, but rather in their favour -- robbing the rich to benefit (or at least amuse) the poor. D'mero's travels aboard the Seventh Song ended while he was a teenager: he explored too far into dangerous territory (in the Corporate Sector), and was caught. Despite his eventual escape, he had lost his clan and decided instead to continue travelling on his own.

That was not the only time law-enforcers or cartel henchmen caught him. The young Ryn saw the inside of many a holding cell -- but managed to escape sooner or later. He continued stealing to survive, selling whatever he chose not to keep -- but also collected secrets, information gleaned while thieving which he could then sell. It was a... modestly profitable business, and as such formed the bulk of D'mero's activities right into his adult years.

The drive and focus of D'mero Dust-Tail's life changed particularly after capture by the First Order on a backwater world in the Outer Rim. He was in his late 30s, exploring the galaxy during the years that the First Order rose to power. The Ryn found himself well and truly caged, and all attempts to free himself had failed. The claustrophobia he suffered grew to a point that it threatened to drive him mad. His treatment after capture (which he claimed was for 'simple theft') left him feeling considerably weakened.

It was a fellow prisoner, a human named Jeb Farrow, who facilitated D'mero's escape, as well as his own. Farrow was nothing but a tradesman from the Mid Rim... and a member of the Resistance. With the help of his contacts, he and D'mero Dust-Tail made it to a Resistance outpost to heal. For D'mero, the healing process took some time. When he felt well enough to venture out into the galaxy once more, he thanked his new friends and went separate ways.

The Ryn's brief time with the Resistance has shaped his outlook upon the galaxy, particularly enhancing his already-ingrained sense of family. While it was not enough for him to formally join the Resistance, D'mero cares a great deal more about the injustices around him. If there is a way for a vagrant such as he to set some wrongs right... he will find it.

And make a profit at the same time, if he can help it.

Personality

D'mero, like the rest of his people, goes wherever the wind takes him. Having... misplaced his clan, he has been travelling alone while trying to find them. For all his 'legally impaired' activities, his heart is in the right place (or so he would like to think), and often finds himself 'chasing rabbit trails' so to speak, helping others.

With the influence of recent events upon him, D'mero has become something of a Resistance sympathiser. While he is not a member of the faction (at this point) he may well end up in the same boat -- or prison cell, again -- as those fighting against the First Order.

He is a superstitious fellow -- seeing signs and portents in just about everything -- greatly devoted to 'family', a lover of stories and duels of wit... and Sabacc (which, he claims his people invented).
